There’s truth in advertising with “Quicksand,” which mostly takes place in a pit of the viscous stuff, watching two characters manage a fight for their lives as they deal with survival challenges while slowly sinking into the ground. It’s a simple concept, and the screenplay by Matt Pitts doesn’t push too hard when trying to add complications to the situation, sticking with physical attacks and psychological decline. As for suspense, “Quicksand” doesn’t provide much of a thrill ride, with the low-budget nature of the production greatly limiting its ability to create tension. Instead of chills, director Andres Beltran hopes to hit the heart, transforming a dire situation of certain doom for a troubled couple into study of long-term commitment, which limits the potential for B-movie excitement I’m sure many are expecting from this slow-burn endeavor.
